Thoughts on Life: Don’t They Know It’s The End Of The World?

Thinking_44121810I’ve been thinking about some big things. Now, I will be the first to tell you that

  1. I might be way over my head in these ponderings, and

  2. I might also be completely wrong ( or at least a little off base :)

But let me go on and you can add your thoughts and ideas and arguments in the comments, I would love that.

In our current social/political climate I think it’s understandable that I would be asking a lot of questions about the fate of our world, from gun laws and mass shootings to same sex marriage and divorce, I think it’s fair to say the moral compass of our land is in question but my big thoughts are more concerned with  the roles of the church and followers of Christ in this present situation. Are we really doing what , based on the Bible, our beliefs command us to do?As a very wise friend of mine said, in a fabulous blog post you should totally read

“ In the Great Commission it says to make disciples of all nations … not disciple the nation.”

If, as the Bible teaches us , we believe that this world will part ways with the way God intended it to be to the point that Jesus returns, what then is our role in this predictable sinking ship, if you will ?

As Galadriel says in The Lord of the Rings ” The time of the elves is over.Do we leave Middle-Earth to this fate? Do we let them stand alone?”

If we look at Jesus in the Gospels we do not see a man concerned with the political arena, a man desperate to change the morals of the people by way of the laws of the land. We see our Saviour in the communities he finds himself, reaching out for connections with the people. We see Him meeting their needs, reaching into their lives through relationship, compassion, kindness.

Right now is a trying and yet wonderful time to be a part of the Body of Christ, Grace is being taught and lived in our churches in a more honest way than it has been in a long time, but at the same time our influence in the world is  decreasing.Truthfully I would have to say that we are in the middle of two extremes, on one side we are overly concerned with “ discipling  the nation” and on the other we are courting the worlds affection and second guessing every sermon to make sure we aren’t offending anyone. I know this is not an easy road to navigate,it’s right for us to proclaim the Gospel and to be fearless in our desire for holiness, and  it’s right for us to challenge ourselves against scripture and check our selves to make sure we are being loving and speaking truth in that love , at the same time Jesus made it very clear that the world would hate us the way they hated Him.  (John 15:18) Can we handle that?

In an open letter to the American Church, author Brennan Manning wrote at length about the state of our church today , the whole letter is worth reading but I will only quote a bit of it here, You can read the rest in his book The Signature of Jesus.

“If the apostle (Paul) were to return to the earth today, I believe he would call the entire American church to return to the discipline of the secret. This ancient practice of the apostolic church was implemented to protect the sacred name of Jesus Christ from mockery and the mysteries of the Christian faith from profanation. The ancient church avoided mention of baptism, Eucharist, and the death and resurrection of Christ in the presence of the unbaptized. Why?  Because the most persuasive witness was the way one lived, not the words one spoke. Soren Kierkegaard once described two types of Christians: The first group comprises those who imitate Jesus Christ; the second are those who are content to speak about him. “ (emphasis mine)

If we are supposed to leave people with no question of our faith and if the best way to demonstrate and share our faith is through showing real tangible love in the ways that Jesus demonstrated then aren’t we called to be set apart by our unfathomable love for others and extreme acts of grace and mercy ?To truly set ourselves apart by our actions in this world? Perhaps living our faith out loud is not about standing on a street corner yelling about the sins of the world but being a people that act so differently that the world is forced to ask “ what is the hope that is in you?”

“Do what you will; but I will hinder it, if I may.”

Last week I had the opportunity, thanks to the generosity of some wonderful people, to attend the Exodus Leadership Reunion in Orlando. It was literally a life changing several days for me. God opened my eyes to some things that I believe  will be defining in my life for days, weeks, months and years ahead. I am deeply grateful for the chance to be a part of such an amazing and inspiring group of people.

There are many things I’m going to share about the last several days, but I want to start with the least expected and most surprising of my experiences.

One of the things I was looking forward to most on this trip was having the chance to finally get to have a face to face conversation with Brad Sargent, a man I have admired for some time. Brad is a man of intelligence beyond description, but what I like about him most is the way he radiates pure joy and excitement for the world around him.

eowynOne of the many things we discussed was the importance of storytelling in our lives, one in particular, Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings. During one of these conversations (there were a few ;>) I shared with Brad about why I am drawn to the character Eowyn. I have never been a fan of “girl power” messages mostly having to do with their tendency to encourage women to compare themselves to men and come out ahead. It’s rare to find a strong heroine that does not in some way out-do her male peers in her rise to glory, or in some way imply that she is not their equal, but superior. In the character of Eowyn we find a young woman who longs to do the job of a man, to protect and defend those she loves, so much so she’s willing to pretend to be a man. But when her moment comes the only way to do what must be done is to be exactly who she is, a woman. I remember when my Mom read this part to my siblings and I for the first time and I thought “that is the type of girl I am.”

On the plane ride home I started thinking about that conversation again and about our Creator and being made in his image. I started to deeply ponder what it is to be a woman made in the image of God. I’ll admit that the maternal nature of God is something I’ve always struggled with. I had my fair share of struggles in my relationship with my own Mom and through that filter I wasn’t able to get as comfortable with God the Mother as I am with God the Father. In that moment I realized that I have been able to relate to God as a daughter, as a child, even as a sister, but not as an image bearer. Silently and without even realizing it I began asking God to show me how I am made in his image as a woman and almost as quickly as I asked He showed me something astounding.

The picture that came to my mind was that of a lioness defending her cubs and then of Jesus on the cross. It seemed confusing at first but then it came together. As I thought and prayed I realized that when I think about the path to the cross I picture a sorrowful and resigned Jesus, I think of Jesus’ lionessconversation with his Father in the garden and his human plea to let this cup pass from him. I see Jesus carry his cross, broken, bleeding, and silently mourning the actions of his creations. On that airplane somewhere between Orlando and Dallas God made it clear to me that this picture I have carried in my heart and mind for my entire life was wrong.  The image of the lioness came back to my mind. There’s a beautiful violence and determination in the way mothers protect their young that isn’t limited to the animal kingdom, I dare you to lay a hand on one of my sisters children! The maternal instinct to protect is different than the protector in a man. I saw Jesus again, but this picture was different. The resignation I’d always seen was replaced by a steady determination. The sorrow I had always pictured was gone and instead I saw Jesus carrying His cross in righteous rage, every labored step forward roaring in the way that only a mother can, “You will have to go through me to get to them!”

For the first time I began to see what it means to be a woman who bears the image of God. I recognized that this was what I admired about Eowyn’s character. The image of God in women shows itself in our ferocity.

This is only the beginning of a discovery for me, I’m sure, but it reminds me how much bigger God is than I give Him credit for sometimes. I can’t go back to the image of Jesus I had before that moment. I recognize the fierce love I saw in Jesus’ face in the second picture because I have felt it, and that’s the image I was made in.

Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.

- Isaiah 53:4-5

Video Tuesday: Sing Along by Christy Nockels

I love this song so much. The White Flag album is amazing and has a lot of wonderful songs but this one ministers to me and puts me in such an attitude of prayer ! Enjoy and share .

From babies hidden in the shadows,
To the cities shining bright,
There are captives weeping far from sight.
For every doorway there’s a story,
And some are holding back the cry,
But there is One who hears us in the night.

Great God, wrap Your arms around the world tonight,
Around the world tonight.
And when You hear our cry, sing through the night.
So we can join in Your song,
And sing along, yeah, we’ll sing along.

For the farthest corners of the earth,
Still His mercy reaches,
Even to the pain we cannot see.
And even through the darkness,
There’s a promise that will keep us.
There is One who came to set us free.

Great God, wrap Your arms around the world tonight,
Around the world tonight.
And when You hear our cry, sing through the night.
So we can join in Your song,
And sing along, yeah, we’ll sing along.

So let Your song rise and fill up the earth,
And let Your hope ring out, let Your heart be heard.

Get just the song or the whole album here.

Let It Be.

letitbe2I struggle. I struggle with lots of different things. I think it’s safe to say we ALL struggle. . . with lots of different things. Struggling is hard, it’s good because it means we aren’t giving up , it means we are fighting to overcome whatever it is we are struggling with. Fighting is hard. Sometimes it feels like in the midst of this struggle, this fight to not give in , to not become what I don’t want to become, to not give up and stop trying to better than I am right now, it feels like I only have two choices, two options. One, to keep fighting and hope that I am strong enough or to break.

But I think we are missing an important third option.

Matthew, Mark and Luke all share their account of Jesus going to the garden and praying right before He was arrested and crucified . They say He fell to his knees, wept, sweat drops of blood and was overcome with grief. And He prayed for God to take away the cup that was before him .

How many times have you or I been in the midst of such a struggle that we feel something similar to what Jesus was going through? Have you ever been so tied up in knots over this struggle that you felt like laying on the floor and screaming and begging God to please please take it away ?

In the midst of this anguish , which I think it is safe to say was much greater than any you or I have ever felt , Jesus says to The Father,” Your will, not mine be done. “

Let it be. I trust you. You love me.

And here is our third option, to  come before God with our broken hearts and Just say, Lord, Let it be . That doesn’t mean that we stop fighting or that anything goes away but there in that moment, standing in God’s grace for us that tells us He will show us a way out, we acknowledge that our struggle has a purpose. There is peace in that place. For a moment just rest. Knowing that he loves us as we fight and because we fight and even if we don’t fight. Trust Him, He doesn’t waste anything, no hurt or pain or suffering or struggle.

Romans 5:1-5 says

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith,we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace by which we now stand.

And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings,because we know that suffering produces perseverance;

perseverance, character; and character , hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out

into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Blessed to Receive

Christmas time is a time to give and receive , I think if asked we would all say that the greatest of these is to give. But I have to disagree. Receiving I believe is a far greater challenge for most of us and something that we thankfully don’t have to talk about because our society is so fixed on giving. I’m not saying it’s bad to give only that I think we are missing something when we don’t know how to receive well.

If we look at the life of Jesus we see that He was in a constant state of receiving, he had no home, He moved around and was constantly receiving food and shelter from those who gave to Him . We also see an example of this in the story of the woman anointing Jesus with perfume .

In an article from The Christian Century, Dec, 1998 William Willimon says

We prefer to think of ourselves as givers–powerful, competent, self-sufficient, capable people whose goodness motivates us to employ some of our power, competence and gifts to benefit the less fortunate. Which is a direct contradiction of the biblical account of the first Christmas. There we are portrayed not as the givers we wish we were but as the receivers we are. Luke and Matthew go to great lengths to demonstrate that we–with our power, generosity, competence and capabilities–had little to do with God’s work in Jesus. God wanted to do something for us so strange, so utterly beyond the bounds of human imagination, so foreign to human projection, that God had to resort to angels, pregnant virgins, and stars in the sky to get it done. We didn’t think of it, understand it or approve it. All we could do, at Bethlehem, was receive it. A gift from a God we hardly even knew.

Can we receive ? Can we challenge ourselves to be the kind of people who having received an amazing, unthinkable gift in Jesus Christ go forward and bless others ? Yes I believe that being a good receiver makes you an even better giver!

Thankful

This morning I’m sitting in my Dad’s dining room while my sisters, Kristin and Kaylan, are cooking, Kari is in the shower, Kevin and his family are in Houston spending Thanksgiving at home. My nieces are sitting on stools watching what’s going on in the kitchen and eating cinnamon rolls. My brother in-law, Kari’s boyfriend, Alan (family friend)  and my nephew are still sleeping. Kaylan’s boyfriend is “helping” in the kitchen by being the official food taster, my great-uncle is watching TV and my Dad is sitting beside me drinking coffee.

It’s 8:30am and this is only the beginning.

As the day goes on this house will fill with more family and friends. There will be lots of food, lots of laughing, probably a little fighting.

The only missing element this Thanksgiving morning is the sound of my Mom’s voice and laughter in the mix, but I’m sure that Heaven rings with both today– my Mom has a laugh that sings with joy.

This morning I am thankful.

I’m thankful for a family that isn’t perfect, but knows how to love.  A family who creates a place for people to belong.

I’m thankful for possibility.

I’m thankful for the sound of my neighbor singing to and giggling with her three-year old daughter, after the terrifying sound of her screams for help last Thursday morning.

I’m especially thankful for God’s grace– grace that allows us to see what is beautiful in the midst of pain and struggle, that inspires us to love when it is most needed, to act when it requires the most bravery, and that makes it possible for us to carry inside us God’s spirit.

I hope that this Thanksgiving morning you will be filled with the awareness of God’s great love for you, whatever your day looks like, whatever you face tomorrow.

Marriage

This is one of the best descriptions of what marriage is for that I’ve ever heard. When you have some time, please give it a listen. It’s also got some stuff on gender roles in there!

Video Tuesday. Shine!

I know it’s not Christmas yet and I mean Thanksgiving no disrespect but I am already in a Christmasey mood and as odd as you may find it this song speaks to me of the real Christmas message so I am sharing it with you, I hope you enjoy!

Send me a sign
A hint, a whisper
Throw me a line
‘Cause I am listening

Come break the quiet
Breathe your awakening
Bring me to life
‘Cause I am fading

(Surround me) with the rush of angels’ wings

Shine Your light so I can see You
Pull me up, I need to be near You
Hold me, I need to feel love
Can You overcome this heart that’s overcome?

You sent a sign
A hint, a whisper
Human divine
Heaven is listening

Death laid love quiet
Yet in the night a stirring

(All around) the rush of angels

Oh, the wonder of the greatest love has come

Shine Your light so all can see it
Lift it up, ’cause the whole world needs it
Love has come, what joy to hear it
He has overcome
He has overcome
